Exped Schools is project designed to get young people, fit and healthy by involving them in healthy and adventurous activity with supported classroom based learning. The project has many other benefits including developing teamwork, improving water confidence, and improving IT skills.  Exped is an interactive project in which young people follow an adveturous expedition through the schools interactive white board, bringing the coastal environment directly into the classroom.

In 2005 Exped Schools introduced 900 young people to the world of paddle sports on the back of a circumnavigation of Britain by sea kayak. All 900 young people taking part worked toward their BCU one star award. This project was funded by Camden Primary Care Trust whilst a large component of the project sought to enthuse young people and educate them about the environment that surrounds them.

In 2006 Exped ran a climbing based project and 500 young people learnt to climb, got fitter and stronger and used the Exped Schools website to share their climbing experiences through narrative, pictures and art work all of which were put up on the schools home page.

In keeping with the original project, in 2008, Jeff and Harry intend to start an expedition to paddle the entire length of the Norwegian Coast, from Oslo in the South, to the small town of Kirkenes on the Russian/Norwegian border, far to the North. Sixty percent of Norway’s coastline lies above the Artic circle and with over 25,000 kilometres of coastline Harry and Jeff will have to commit themselves to many long and arduous open sea crossings. The expedition will be totally self supporting, with no shore support of any means, carrying all their provisions within their kayaks. During the expedition the schools involved will follow the trip via the net, learn about the coastal environment, be supported by educational resources, monitor and reflect on their diet and exercise and take part in paddlesports at their local paddling provision. Being involved in Exped Schools will get young people thinking about exercise in a different and appealing way and then go paddling for real. Exped Schools works because from a young person’s perspective Exped is exciting and fun.
