Exped Schools 2006 is an initiative which links together healthy exercise, diet and involvement in exciting and adventurous activity. Funded by Camden Primary Care Trust, Exped Schools is run through the Jubilee Waterside Trust in Camden.

In 2005 Exped Schools involved 900 primary pupils through the project. Students first had to take part in walking and playground based activity to prepare them for the next exciting phase of the project. Once walking sessions were completed students came to the Jubilee Centre and took part in the sport of kayaking. Whilst the project was taking place, a team of kayakers from the Jubilee Centre circumnavigated the coast of Britain in their sea kayaks and sent electronic information back to class rooms via a regularly updated website. This information looked at coastal wildlife, geography, weather, nutrition and the diverse nature of coastal Britain.

Pupils who took part in the project became fit and active, gained water confidence learnt more on diet and nutrition and took part in a virtual expedition through the web.

Following additional funding from the PCT we are continuing the Exped Schools theme. We are involving 420 pupils in playground exercise and by introducing them to the sport of rock climbing. Pupils will be involved in six sessions of climbing with the final session of climbing taking place in their playground on a mobile climbing wall.

Each child will do a worksheet on nutrition and one on climbing. They will fill in their own log book for each of the six walking and climbing sessions. Each child will complete a team ascent of the wall in competion with other schools.

We have eleven separate schools involved in this project. The pupils of each school will practice team work as they compete against the other schools to climb the highest cumulative height on the mobile wall. The winning school will compete for the coveted Exped Trophy!

During the project the schools will each have a web page to tell their story. We look forward to receiving the children's contributions to their school's page.
