Map of Progress here >>

ExpedSchools is a brand new initiative aimed to improve the health of pupils within the London Borough of Camden through activities based both on and offsite. This initiative is being run by the Jubilee Waterside Centre, an AALA outdoor activity centre in Camden in association with the Camden Schools Sports Partnership. Funding is being provided by the Camden Health Action Zone.

This initiative will target 900 students in year 5. The overall focus is to improve pupil's knowledge of health and nutrition and to encourage them to take part in regular exercise and make learning fun. Every young person who takes part in the initiative will walk 6 miles, learn kayaking at the Jubilee and gain a B.C.U 1 star award in kayaking.

How will it work?
The programme will focus on a kayaking expedition of three people circumnavigating the British coastline beginning early May 2005. To coincide with this, pupils will walk six miles of their school playground and have six kayaking sessions at the Jubilee Centre. This is broken down into two distinct phases.

To tie the trip and the schools activity together, this dedicated website has been set up (www.expedschools.org). This is how the expedition team will keep in contact, sending information back to the schools on their progress, what they are eating, what animals they have seen, where they are etc., on a regular basis. This will give pupils the opportunity to follow the expedition and take an active role in the adventure.

Phase 1 - Onsite activity at school
At the same time the expedition is happening, pupils involved will walk six miles around their school playground (May to July). The walk will be broken down into 1 mile sections happening every two weeks. The walking element is an important aspect of the initiative as it gets pupils used to regular health and exercise. Each time a mile is completed pupils will complete a diary entry in their log book and receive a piece of fruit or similar health option to eat. They will also get to put an Exped sticker into their log book.

The information sent back by the kayak team will look at:

Photographs will accompany the regular reports and pupils will have worksheets to complete on the above topic areas. All work sheets will be prepared in advance of the trip and log books, stickers and food will be delivered to the school at specified times. All schools taking part will be visited in advance of the initiative and a member of the Jubilee Centre will explain the initiative to pupils and issue them with their individual log books.

Phase 2 - Offsite at the Jubilee Waterside Centre

Once the six walking sessions are completed in the playground, all pupils who took part will be able to kayak at the Jubilee Waterside Centre and work towards achieving a B.C.U 1 Star award.

To gain the award students will have to complete 6 hours of kayaking. One of these sessions will take place in a local swimming pool and include elements of personal water safety; we will teach capsize drills as well as play other water related games to improve confidence.

There is no doubt that the kayaking element of the initiative will improve water confidence and introduce the young people to an exciting, dynamic and accessible sport that they can take part in. On completion pupils will be issued with their B.C.U 1 Star Award which is a national recognised proficiency award.

Cost to the School?
There is no cost to the school!  The Jubilee Waterside Centre has secured funding to cover the full cost of the initiative from the Camden Health Action Zone. All you need to do is commit now!

Each school will receive log books, worksheets, food, stickers, certificate and posters and the cost of six hours kayaking at the Jubilee free of charge .

However for the initiative to work, each school will have to take responsibility for monitoring the pupils as they walk their 6 mile's over the summer term and be there to hand out fruit and stickers. It is important that work sheets and log books are completed and that there is one teacher in each school who will over see the programme.
